IRS Scam
October 29, 2015
The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a possible scam involving people claiming to be with the IRS. The Citizens of Gregg County are warned to watch for phone numbers with a 202 area code. Scammers claiming to be affiliated with the IRS are threatening with law suits and police action if immediate payment is not made.
“Note that the IRS will never: 1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill; 2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe; 3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card; 4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone; or 5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.”
If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with the IRS and demanding you do something that goes against this list, hang up the phone immediately to avoid becoming the victim of a scam.
